Vijay Singh has clearly carried his 2003 form into
2004 judging by his performance in this week's Mercedes
Championship. And, although this is looking a long
way down the line, the big Fijian could be a cracking
ante-post bet at 16/1 for this summer's US Open
at Shinnecock.
Vijay wants a career Slam of all the Majors so
having won the Masters and USPGA he's now got his
eye on both Opens. His US Open record is impressive
- five top tens and it should really have been six
but for last year's collapse when he was in a great
position. One of those top tens came at Shinnecock
in 1995 (T10) so clearly he likes the course. And,
significantly, this is what he revealed in his pre-Mercedes
press conference:
"I love Shinnecock, played a lot of rounds there
recently. I'm very in tune with that." If he continues
to play like he is doing, I can envisage a single
figure price come June so taking the 16s now on
the 2003 US Money List winner could be a smart move.
